Slow-motion footage of Apple’s latest object of desire coming off second best to an extremely large calibre projectile takes testing-to-destruction videos to a whole new level.
YouTube videos detailing water resistance, drop tests and other forms of smartphone durability have become commonplace and the uncomfortable thrill of seeing what is often an object of desire being wantonly damaged has started to dull as a result. Just like seeing a Ferrari destroyed in a Hollywood blockbuster car chase, it’s become a cliché.
However, this video, the work of RatedRR, could well reinvigorate the genre. First of all it features the rarest of all smartphones — the gold version of the iPhone 5S — and secondly, it features heavy weaponry. Clearly a drop test, even off a cliff wasn’t good enough for the filmmakers and they decided instead to see how the, ultimately fragile, device would fare against a 50 calibre round fired from a Barrett Model 82A1 military rifle.
If you are in any doubt whatsoever as to the results, or whether or not the phone would still be able of launching FaceTime, check out the video.
